Rosacea - (Erythematotelangiectatic)
I have been wondering what that red stuff was on my face. I know it wasn't acne, I haven't had a pimple in years; I just thought it was dry skin from the Sierras... I remember when I was growing up my grandfather had rosy red cheeks…I see now that I got the redness from him. Today they call it "Rosacea." Rosacea is a common but often misunderstood condition that is estimated that it affects over 45 million people worldwide.
When I first got rosacea, it was like a little redness on the center of the face and across the cheeks and my nose.
Later on it got worse. You see, as rosacea progresses, other symptoms develop such as permanent redness, red bumps (some with pus), red gritty eyes, burning and stinging sensations, small blood vessels visible near the surface of the skin, and in some advanced cases, the classic Jimmy Durante bulbous nose.
If you are fair-skinned, you are disproportionately at risk. More fair-skinned people have rosacea than any other group.
As of 2011, research has shown that there are four identified types of rosacea; and patients may have more than one of these types of rosacea combined with other types.
-
Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea: Permanent redness (erythema) with a tendency to flush and blush easily. It is also common to have small blood vessels visible near the surface of the skin (telangiectasias) and possibly burning or itching sensations.
-
Papulopustular rosacea: Some permanent redness with red bumps (papules) with some pus filled (pustules) (which typically last 1-4 days); this subtype can be easily confused with acne.
-
Phymatous rosacea: This subtype is most commonly associated with rhinophyma, an enlargenent of the nose. Symptoms include thickening skin, irregular surface nodularities, and enlargement. Phymatous rosacea can appear on the nose, chin, forehead, cheeks, and ears. Small blood vessels visible near the surface of the skin (telangiectasias) may be present.
-
Ocular rosacea: Red, dry and irritated eyes and eyelids. Some other symptoms include foreign body sensations, itching and burning. Rosacea sufferers often report periods of depression stemming from cosmetic disfigurement, painful burning sensations, and decreases in quality of life.
