Botox in the news

A Wyoming high school senior is the first person in the world to receive a unique Botox treatment to reduce her chronic pain. Laura Stamp was diagnosed with Compartment Syndrome last fall after experiencing constant pain in her legs. "What we ended up finding is that her veins were being compressed by her muscles up in her thigh," Dr. Joseph McGinley said. That was blocking blood flow from leaving her calf muscles and causing them to expand like a balloon. The solution was Botox.

Most people know Botox for cosmetic reasons, using it to block muscles in the face and stopping muscle contractions. Dr. McGinley used the same medical methodology to alleviate the pain in Laura's calves. "We ended up putting Botox in the muscle that was compressing the vein," he said. "It saves very young people and young athletes from a quite invasive surgery." A surgery that Dr. McGinley says only works half the time.

Within two weeks after her first treatment Stamp was back on the soccer field and already training for the upcoming cross country season. "It felt great," she said. In most cases, Botox lasts five to six months, but because Stamp is the only person in the world to receive this particular treatment doctors don't know if it will be shorter or longer. There is also a possibility that with the injection the muscle may weaken and may not compress the vein as much as it typically would, alleviating pain

KEEP YOUR SKIN HEALTHY

The best way to keep your skin healthy is to avoid sun exposure.

  1. - STAY OUT OF THE SUN. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. This is when the sun's UV rays are strongest. Don't be fooled by cloudy skies. Harmful rays pass through clouds. UV radiation also can pass through water, so don't assume you're safe if you're in the water and feeling cool.
  2. - USE SUNSCREEN. Sunscreens are rated in strength according to a sun protection factor (SPF), which ranges from 2 to 30 or higher. A higher number means longer protection. Buy products with an SPF number of 15 or higher. Also look for products whose label says: broad spectrum (meaning they protect against both types of harmful sun rays--UVA and UVB) and water resistant (meaning they stay on your skin longer, even if you get wet or sweat a lot). Remember to reapply the lotion as needed.
  3. - WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING. A hat with a wide brim shades your neck, ears, eyes, and head. Look for sunglasses with a label saying the glasses block 99 to 100 percent of the sun's rays. Wear loose, lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants or long skirts when in the sun.
  4. - AVOID ARTIFICIAL TANNING. Don't use sunlamps and tanning beds, as well as tanning pills and tanning makeup. Tanning pills have a color additive that turns your skin orange after you take them. The FDA has approved this color additive for coloring foods but not for tanning the skin. The large amount of color additive in tanning pills may be harmful. Tanning make-up products are not suntan lotions and will not protect your skin from the sun.
  5. - CHECK YOUR SKIN OFTEN. Look for changes in the size, shape, color, or feel of birthmarks, moles, and spots. If you find any changes that worry you, see a doctor. The American Academy of Dermatology suggests that older, fair-skinned people have a yearly skin check by a doctor as part of a regular physical exam.

Botox Injection for wrinkles

BOTOX TREATMENTS

I have a lot of friends who have tried Botox, and they seem happy with the results. I am not crazy about this type of thing, I still haven't tried dying my hair yet, so something like this is rather extreme. There are some reservations that you might have about this Botox thing, there are dangers involved.

Typically the amount of Botox side effects and Botox dangers remain low. Any Botox side effects can typically only last 6 months at a maximum, because Botox treatments are temporary but there have been rare spontaneous reports of death, sometimes associated with dysphagia, pneumonia, and/or other significant debility or anaphylaxis, after treatment with botulinum toxin.

About 3% of us, range from adverse reactions including pain in the face, erythema at the injection site, and muscle weakness. These events are thought to be associated with the injection and occurred within the first week. Weakness may also occur in the adjacent muscles due to the spread of toxin.

Botox injection treatments were approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for cosmetic use in April of 2002. Since 2008 there were 16 reported deaths related to the Botox treatment.

Botox cosmetic is a drug used for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines. These "frown lines" come from muscles called corrugators and/or procerus muscles.

Botox injection treatments are successfully used to treat blepharospasm and strabismus, and Botox treatments are also proven useful in treating cervical dystonia – each one of these conditions in some way involve spasms, involuntary muscle contractions.

There is another procedure available for wrinkles, called Restylane. It is an exciting injection procedure that can get rid of wrinkles and enhances areas of your face immediately. Areas like the lips, superficial lines around the mouth, forehead lines, and our smile lines.

This treatment consists of injecting Restylane into the skin with a very thin needle. It is injected into this area, and restores the area to a younger looking state. The wrinkle is now smoothed out. This takes about 30 minutes and leaves no marks or scars, and the results can be seen immediately. Follow up injections typically need less Restylane to achieve the results you want and the time between injections is typically 6 to 12 months.

Choose your Botox® injection doctor carefully.
