STOP SKIN AGING
How to Prevent Lines & Wrinkles
MEDICAL EDITION: RENO, NV
Looks like everyone wants to look younger these days. Every other commercial on TV is for some baby boomer be younger product. I am a baby boomer myself, so its funny when I see Car ads with Led Zepplin music behind it. I would like to "look better" but I don't think I will ever dye my hair, even when it goes completely white. Wrinkles are another story... wrinkles and age spots. That's what worries a lot of people.
We recieved a letter from S. Richards who said, I just got these age spots on my hands recently, and someone called them liver spots. Are these caused by my liver or what? -- Good Question.
Age spots, or "liver spots" as they're often called, have nothing to do with the liver. Rather, these flat, brown spots are caused by years of sun exposure. They are bigger than freckles and appear in fair-skinned people on sun-exposed areas such as the face, hands, arms, back, and feet. The medical name for them is solar lentigo. They may be accompanied by wrinkling, dryness, thinning of the skin, and rough spots.
A number of treatments are available, including skin-lightening, or "fade" creams; cryotherapy (freezing); and laser therapy. Tretinoin cream is approved for reducing the appearance of darkened spots. A sunscreen or sun block should be used to prevent further damage.
Wrinkle products are coming out everyday, so I decided to take a look at each product and procedure to see which is the best one for the money. In a people magazine article somewhere, I read that in 2010,
Americans spent billions of dollars on skin care products that promised to erase wrinkles. My doctor is such a * sometimes, but they are correct..."the simplest and cheapest way to keep your skin healthy and young looking is to stay out of the sun."
My doctor says "That's right, you want wrinkles?" Go lay out in the sun." Sunlight is a major cause of wrinkles, dryness, and age spots. Yep, those ugly brown spots are caused by the sun; don't like them? Stop going out in the sun without sunscreen!
What about age; does that have an impact on wrinkles? Yes, your skin does change with age. For example, as you age, you sweat less, leading to increased dryness. Also, if you haven't noticed, as you age, your skin ages; it becomes thinner and loses fat, so it looks less plump and smooth. One bump into a table, and you are bleeding... they even call you "thin skin". As we age, underlying structures - the veins and bones in particular become more prominent. Your skin can take longer to heal when injured.
So what can we do to slow down the process. Well, as I said before, you can delay these changes by staying out of the sun.
Wrinkles and UV Light
Why does the sun make wrinkles on your skin? During your lifetime, the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin. The breakdown of these fibers causes the skin to lose its ability to snap back after stretching. As a result, wrinkles form. Of course, our worse enemy is "Gravity". That universal force is constantly dragging your skin down to the earth, as if you are already dead or something...
Another factor for your wrinkles expanding around your mouth is smoking. Cigarettes also contributes to wrinkles. People who smoke tend to have more wrinkles than nonsmokers of the same age, complexion, and history of sun exposure. Facial wrinkling increases with the amount of cigarettes and number of years a person has smoked.
At this time, the only wrinkle products that have been studied for safety and effectiveness and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat signs of sun-damaged or aging skin are tretinoin cream and carbon dioxide (CO2) and erbium (Er:YAG) lasers.
Tretinoin cream (Renova), is made of a vitamin A derivative. It is available by prescription and is approved for reducing the appearance of fine wrinkles, mottled darkened spots, and roughness in people whose skin doesn't improve with regular skin care and use of sun protection. However, it doesn't eliminate wrinkles, repair sun-damaged skin, or restore skin to its healthier, younger structure.
The CO2 lasers are approved to treat wrinkles. If you ask your dermatologist, they will use the laser to remove skin one layer at a time. Laser therapy is performed under anesthesia in an outpatient surgical setting.
